Not Tea or Coffee: The “Golden” Drink That Protects the Heart and Prevents Stroke in People Who Sit a Lot
A new study from the UK has revealed that a familiar beverage may help protect the heart and reduce stroke risk — and it’s especially beneficial for people who spend long hours sitting.
According to the Express, researchers at the University of Birmingham found that hot cocoa — a popular winter drink — may act as a “lifesaver” for cardiovascular health. The study shows that flavanols found in cocoa help maintain blood vessel elasticity, preventing poor circulation caused by prolonged sitting — a key factor linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.
Study Design: Hot Cocoa vs. Another Drink
The research team examined 40 healthy young men, dividing them into two groups. One group consumed hot cocoa containing a high amount of flavanols (about 695 mg), while the other drank a different beverage. Both groups were instructed to remain seated for two hours.
Results showed that the group drinking flavanol-rich cocoa did not experience any decline in blood vessel function. Meanwhile, the other group had reduced arterial elasticity and a slight increase in blood pressure. The researchers concluded that flavanols in hot cocoa can help protect cardiovascular health against the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Birmingham, explained:
“Long periods of sitting at work, while driving, or watching TV can put pressure on the cardiovascular system. Finding natural ways—such as drinking hot cocoa—to reduce this impact is extremely meaningful for heart health.”
Co-author Professor Sam Lucas added:
“Even healthy individuals can benefit from the flavanols in cocoa. Drinking one cup of flavanol-rich hot cocoa daily may help maintain proper blood circulation, especially for those who sit for long periods.”
More Research Supports Cocoa’s Heart Benefits
The Birmingham findings aren’t the only evidence supporting cocoa’s cardiovascular benefits. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension found that regular cocoa consumption improves blood vessel function, lowers blood pressure, and enhances overall circulation. This is because cocoa flavanols stimulate the body’s production of nitric oxide — a compound that relaxes blood vessels, reduces pressure, and eases strain on the heart.
Similarly, The Times of India reports that hot cocoa can help prevent artery blockage or narrowing, major causes of heart disease and stroke. Cocoa flavanols have also been shown to reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and help regulate blood sugar — all of which support heart health.
Expert Recommendations
Health experts suggest that adding one cup of hot cocoa to your daily routine is a simple and natural way to strengthen blood vessels and support long-term cardiovascular health.
For the best results, they recommend choosing pure cocoa powder or products with at least 85% cocoa content. These options contain more flavanols and less sugar and fat, offering the greatest health benefits.
