💔 Olly Murs Reveals Why He Initially Split from Wife Amelia: "I Was in Quite a Bad Place"

Olly Murs and his wife Amelia looking serious

Singer and television personality Olly Murs has candidly discussed the early turbulence in his relationship with his now-wife, bodybuilder Amelia Tank, revealing that he briefly broke off their budding romance because he was struggling with profound personal issues and mental health challenges at the time (The Mirror via Entertainment Daily).1

The couple, who first met in 2019 and married in July 2023, now share two young children: a daughter, Madison (born April 2024), and a son, Albert (born September 2024) (HELLO!2 Magazine, Entertainment Daily).

The Struggle with Loneliness

Before meeting Amelia, Olly had been single for three years following a previous long-term relationship.3 The popular X Factor star admitted that despite his cheerful public persona, he was privately battling a period of "loneliness" and emotional turmoil.4

"All the cheekiness and the fun in the years I was single, it was just a facade," Olly confessed in a 2022 interview with The Mirror. "I was in quite a bad place at times. I didn't talk about it to anyone. I just felt really s**t, down and lonely. I didn't like being single" (Daily Record).

This mental state severely affected his ability to form new, meaningful relationships. He developed insecurities and grew wary of people's intentions, constantly questioning if they were with him "for the right reasons" due to his fame (Daily Record).5

The "Wishy-Washy" Dates and the Breakup

Olly and Amelia first connected in early 2019 after the singer came across her profile and the two began chatting online, later meeting at the gym, as both are fitness enthusiasts (Bustle, OK!6 Magazine). However, the initial dates were far from romantic success.

"To be fair, our first dates were pretty crap – even she admits that," Olly joked (Daily Star). Because of his internal struggles and cautious nature, Olly was "very wishy-washy, very noncommittal" and felt "all over the place" (HELLO! Magazine).

Ultimately, his hesitancy and fear of vulnerability led him to cut things short. "I broke it off," he admitted (Entertainment Daily).7

💡 The Epiphany and The Rekindling

Fortunately, the split was brief. Olly soon had an "epiphany" that summer, realizing he had made a huge mistake by letting Amelia go.8

"I was like: 'What am I doing, she’s [expletive]ing perfect, she’s the one for me. Stop being an idiot!'" he recalled (HELLO! Magazine).

He quickly "rekindled" the romance, and the couple's relationship gained strength rapidly, particularly when the COVID-19 lockdown began shortly after Amelia moved into his Essex mansion in February 2020.9 This unexpected time together allowed them to build a solid foundation (Bustle). Amelia subsequently supported Olly through one of his darkest periods, including his battle with loneliness, a difficult knee injury recovery, and the tragic death of his close friend, Caroline Flack, in 2020 (Daily Record).10

Olly proposed in June 2022 on a clifftop in Cornwall.11 The proposal itself was an act of dedication, as he had to train intensely for 12 weeks just to climb the cliff following his third major knee surgery (Daily Record).12 They married in July 2023.13

Reflecting on his new life as a husband and father of two, Olly says he feels "truly blessed" and is content with their family of four for now, though he humorously adds, "Who knows?14 Amelia might change her mind [laughs]" about expanding their family (Entertainment Daily).
