PART 2: “I didn’t invite you, Mom.”
Soft wedding strings floated through the elegant church entrance as guests smiled beneath white flowers and bright afternoon light. Stone steps gleamed beneath polished shoes. Then the first shock struck. Daniel stepped directly in front of the church doors, blocking his mother’s path. His tuxedo perfect. His face cold. “I didn’t invite you, Mom.” Murmurs rippled through the guests. Cameras lowered. He delivered the second blow without hesitation. “You’re not family anymore.” Silence spread across the steps. His mother, in an elegant navy dress, said nothing at first. She simply gripped her purse tighter, pain flickering once behind composed eyes. Then she looked straight at him and answered calmly, “That’s fine, son…” She leaned in just enough for only him to hear. “But check your phone.” Then she turned and walked away down the stone steps, heels echoing like verdicts. Inside the church doors, Daniel’s phone began to vibrate loudly in the hush. Once. Twice. Three times. He frowned and pulled it out. Vanessa’s bridal smile began to crack before she even saw the screen. Camera crash-pushed into the phone. A message from Mom. One attachment. Opened.
A photograph filled the display—Vanessa in yesterday’s rehearsal dress, kissing another man beside a hotel elevator. Guests gasped. Music died completely. Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa, face empty now. She whispered, “It’s not what you—” CUT TO BLACK. But no one moved. The priest lowered his book. Bridesmaids backed away from Vanessa as if guilt were contagious. Daniel’s hand trembled around the phone. “Yesterday?” he asked. Vanessa stepped forward, panicked. “He means nothing.” Another vibration. Daniel looked down. A second attachment arrived. Video file. His mother had kept walking—never once turning back. Daniel pressed play.
Camera close on his face as color drained from it. He raised the phone toward Vanessa. “Then why is he wearing my watch?” Guests erupted into shocked whispers. Vanessa grabbed for the phone. “Daniel, stop!” He pulled away. Another buzz. Third message. A screenshot of a wire transfer from Daniel’s business account to Vanessa’s secret account. Her knees nearly buckled. “I was going to tell you,” she cried. “When?” Daniel asked quietly. “After the honeymoon?” The bride’s father staggered backward into a flower stand. White petals rained across the aisle. Then Daniel looked toward the church doors where his mother had disappeared and said, broken, “How long did you know?” A final vibration. Message four. “Long enough to save your vows.”
