6 types of foods that negatively affect your thyroid

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, just in front of the trachea. It plays a crucial role in releasing hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism, converting the food we consume into energy. Additionally, thyroid hormones influence heart rate, body temperature, brain development, mental function, fertility, and more.
When the thyroid malfunctions, it can impact the entire body. Some of the most common thyroid-related conditions include:
-
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
-
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
-
Goiter (enlarged thyroid)
-
Thyroid cancer
While thyroid diseases are often linked to genetics or autoimmune conditions and can’t always be prevented, issues related to iodine excess or deficiency can generally be avoided.
Certain foods, however, can interfere with the thyroid’s function. Here are some foods that may negatively affect thyroid health:
1. Soy and Soy-Based Products
There has been considerable debate about the impact of isoflavones—compounds found in soy products—on thyroid function. These isoflavones can inhibit the body’s ability to absorb iodine and interfere with thyroid medications.
2. Raw Cruciferous Vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale contain goitrogens, which can reduce iodine absorption, similarly to soy products.
3. Gluten
Those with autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune disorder that causes hypothyroidism), should avoid gluten. Gluten can trigger inflammation and flare-ups in the immune system, which can worsen thyroid conditions.
4. Refined Sugar
Refined sugar is detrimental to everyone’s health, but it particularly worsens symptoms of hypothyroidism. It can lead to inflammation, increase insulin resistance, and exacerbate issues such as weight gain, mood swings, and brain fog.
5. Processed and High-Sodium Foods
Processed foods are typically high in sodium, which people with hypothyroidism should limit. Increased sodium intake can elevate the risk of high blood pressure, which is already a concern for those with hypothyroidism.
6. Coffee (especially after taking thyroid medication)
Though many people enjoy their morning cup of coffee, those on thyroid medications should wait several hours before drinking coffee. It can reduce the absorption of thyroid medications by up to 60%, thereby diminishing their effectiveness and slowing the recovery process.
On the flip side, certain foods are believed to support thyroid health, including fatty fish rich in Omega-3s (such as salmon and sardines), eggs, nuts and seeds, seaweed, and antioxidant-rich fruits like berries, apples, and kiwis.
