🐶 First Aid for a Choking Dog

  1. Check the mouth and throat

    • If your dog is pawing at its mouth, gagging, or unable to breathe, carefully open the mouth.

    • Look for a visible object. If you can safely remove it with your fingers or tweezers, do so.

    • Never push the object deeper into the throat.

  2. Perform the Heimlich maneuver (for dogs)

    • Small dogs: Hold them with their back against your chest. Use two fingers just below the rib cage and push inward and upward firmly.

    • Large dogs: Stand behind the dog, wrap your arms around the abdomen, and make a fist just below the rib cage. Push inward and upward 4–5 times.

  3. Back blows (if Heimlich doesn’t work)

    • Strike firmly between the shoulder blades with the palm of your hand to try to dislodge the object.

  4. Check breathing and heartbeat

    • If the object comes out, ensure your dog is breathing normally.

    • If not breathing, begin CPR for dogs (chest compressions and rescue breaths).

  5. Seek veterinary care immediately

    • Even if the object is removed, choking can cause internal injury or swelling. Always have a vet examine your dog afterward.
