‘Honest’ Mariah Carey insists she still doesn’t know Jennifer Lopez in savage ‘WWHL’ diss
Mariah Carey Revives Her Iconic “I Don’t Know Her” Shade Toward Jennifer Lopez—Again
Mariah Carey is once again making headlines for her legendary shade—this time by doubling down on one of pop culture’s most enduring soundbites: “I don’t know her.” The Grammy-winning diva reignited the decades-old drama during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Wednesday, leaving fans delighted and social media ablaze.
The Shade That Started It All
The infamous phrase dates back to a 2003 interview on German television show taff, when Carey was asked about fellow singer Jennifer Lopez. Her now-iconic response—“I don’t know her”—instantly became a viral meme and a staple of celebrity shade. Over the years, the quote has been dissected, parodied, and even printed on merchandise.
During Wednesday’s interview, Cohen praised the phrase’s cultural staying power, saying, “It’s become part of the lexicon.” Carey, now 56, responded with a smirk:
“The thing is, I was being honest when I said it. So I don’t know how it became so big. Honesty isn’t really something that becomes big most of the time.”
When Cohen cheekily asked if that was still the case, Carey sighed and replied, “How could I suddenly know [her], you know?” The audience erupted in laughter, and fans online quickly labeled her the “queen of shade” once again.
Lopez’s Side of the Story
Jennifer Lopez, 56, has previously addressed the diss. In a 2016 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show, she called Carey “forgetful” and insisted they had met “many times.”
“I’ve met her. She’s forgetful, I guess,” Lopez said, adding that she didn’t understand the animosity.
Carey, however, remained firm in her stance during a 2016 interview with Cohen:
“Apparently, I’m forgetful. Because I don’t remember the fact that it was like, ‘Hi, I’m so and so,’ and then we moved on. I don’t know her. Like what am I supposed to say?”
Lopez’s representatives have not responded to the latest comments.
More Celebrity Shade: Eminem and Nick Cannon
Carey didn’t stop at Lopez. When asked about her long-standing feud with rapper Eminem, she confirmed that his request for her to play his mother in 8 Mile may have sparked the tension.
“There is truth to that,” she said. “I really don’t care. Whatever he said, then I’m that. Fine. Not really, but that’s a rap lyric.”
She also rolled her eyes when asked about ex-husband Nick Cannon, who reportedly insured his testicles for $10 million last year. Carey’s reaction?
“Lord, help me.”
A Legacy of Wit and Iconic Moments
Mariah Carey’s ability to deliver razor-sharp shade with a smile has become part of her brand. Fans admire her for being unapologetically herself, whether she’s dodging questions about co-parenting or playfully dismissing celebrity drama.
As Rolling Stone once noted, “Mariah Carey doesn’t just sing—she reigns. And sometimes, she shades.” Her latest appearance proves that even after decades in the spotlight, Carey still knows how to steal the show.
