If You Have Colon Polyps, These 4 Symptoms During Bowel Movements Could Be a Warning — See a Doctor Before It's Too Late
Colon polyps are small growths that develop on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. While many are harmless, some can gradually develop into colorectal cancer if left untreated. Because early-stage polyps often cause few or no symptoms, many people only discover them during routine screening or after complications appear. Recognizing warning signs early can make a significant difference.
One real-life case involved a 29-year-old man who had experienced digestive problems since childhood but never underwent a colon examination. Over several months, he noticed frequent bowel movements and loose stools. Initially, these symptoms were dismissed as common digestive issues. However, after doctors learned that several close family members had suffered from colorectal cancer, they recommended a colonoscopy.
The examination revealed hundreds of polyps throughout his colon. Some had already shown precancerous changes, requiring immediate treatment. This case highlights the importance of paying attention to digestive symptoms, especially when there is a family history of colorectal cancer.
Although researchers have not identified a single cause of colon polyps, several factors are known to increase the risk. Age remains one of the biggest contributors, as polyps become more common after age 50. A diet high in red meat, processed foods, and saturated fat while lacking fruits, vegetables, and fiber may also encourage polyp formation. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and inherited genetic conditions further increase the likelihood of developing polyps.
One of the earliest warning signs is rectal bleeding. Blood may appear bright red on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl, although in some cases it is only detected through laboratory testing. While bleeding can also result from hemorrhoids, persistent or unexplained bleeding should never be ignored.
Another possible symptom is changes in bowel habits. People may experience persistent diarrhea, constipation, or alternating episodes of both. Some individuals notice thinner-than-usual stools or a constant feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely. When these changes continue for several weeks without an obvious explanation, medical evaluation is recommended.
Abdominal pain or cramping can also occur, particularly when larger polyps partially block the intestine. The discomfort may come and go or become more noticeable after meals or during bowel movements.
In some cases, a polyp may protrude from the anus during a bowel movement. Although uncommon, this typically occurs with larger polyps located near the rectum and should be assessed by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
Fortunately, most colon polyps can be safely removed during a colonoscopy before they become cancerous. Regular screening remains the most effective way to detect and treat polyps early. Adults at average risk are generally encouraged to begin routine colorectal cancer screening around age 45–50, while people with a strong family history or inherited syndromes may need to start much earlier based on their doctor's recommendation.
Healthy lifestyle habits may also reduce risk. Eating more fiber-rich foods, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, drinking adequate water, limiting processed meats, avoiding tobacco, and reducing excessive alcohol consumption all support long-term colon health.
While many digestive symptoms are caused by less serious conditions, persistent bleeding, unexplained changes in bowel habits, ongoing abdominal pain, or a family history of colorectal cancer should never be overlooked. Early diagnosis gives doctors the best opportunity to remove precancerous polyps before they progress into cancer.
