If You Want Your Meat to Stay Fresh Longer, Make Sure to Do This One Extra Step Before Refrigerating

When storing meat, most people tend to place it directly into the refrigerator or freezer and simply thaw it when needed. While this seems convenient, it can actually increase the risk of bacterial contamination, reduce the flavor and texture of the meat, and shorten its overall shelf life. Below is a simple but highly effective method to help you preserve meat longer while keeping it fresh, nutritious, and safe to eat.

1. Prepare the Necessary Items

  • Fresh meat

  • White rice wine (or any mild white cooking wine)

  • Cooking oil

  • Plastic wrap

  • Aluminum foil

These basic items are easy to find in every household, yet they can significantly improve how well the meat stays fresh during storage. Using them properly will help lock in moisture, reduce bacterial growth, and maintain the quality of the meat even after several days—or weeks—in the freezer.

2. How to Store Meat for Longer Freshness

Step 1: Portion the Meat

Cut the meat into smaller pieces according to your family’s serving portions. This way, you only need to take out exactly what you’ll use each time, preventing repeated thawing and refreezing.
Note: Avoid washing the meat before cutting it. Rinsing raw meat can spread bacteria in your kitchen and may also shorten the meat’s preservation time by adding unnecessary moisture.

Step 2: Brush the Meat with White Wine and Oil

Use a small brush to apply a thin layer of white wine over the surface of the meat. White wine acts as a natural disinfectant, helping reduce bacteria and unwanted odors.
After that, lightly brush the surface with a bit of cooking oil. This creates a protective layer that seals in moisture, prevents freezer burn, and helps retain the meat’s nutrients and natural texture.

Step 3: Wrap the Meat Properly

Once seasoned, wrap the meat tightly in plastic wrap to prevent air exposure. Then cover it again with a layer of aluminum foil.
This double-wrapping method offers multiple benefits:

  • Keeps moisture from escaping

  • Protects the meat from frost and ice buildup

  • Maintains a stable temperature

  • Prevents the meat from becoming tough or dry over time

Step 4: Store in the Freezer

Finally, place the wrapped meat into the freezer. Thanks to the protective layers and the disinfecting step, the meat stays fresh much longer and remains flavorful when cooked.
