There’s a “Hidden Component” Under Your Washing Machine That Can Make Your Clothes Cleaner and Fresher

When cleaning your washing machine, skipping this small component can leave your clothes still dirty after a wash—or even cause your machine to waste water and electricity.

Most People Only Think About Cleaning the Drum

When it comes to washing machine maintenance, most people focus solely on the drum, where clothes are placed. However, there are several hidden areas where dirt, detergent residues, and bacteria accumulate over time—areas that are often overlooked. When the washing machine runs, these bacteria and residues can re-enter the drum, preventing clothes from being fully clean.

The Hidden Drain Pump Compartment

On the lower left or right corner of most washing machines, there’s a small drain pump compartment, usually covered by a tiny door. Many people forget to clean this area. If left uncleaned, millions of bacteria can build up, causing clothes to smell, attract dirt, and even pose potential skin or health problems.

To clean the drain pump:

  1. Carefully open the compartment with a pointed object.

  2. Inside, you will find a small drain tube with a latch. Pressing the latch allows dirty water to flow out.

  3. Use a cup or container to collect the water and avoid spilling it on the floor. The color and odor of the water will depend on how frequently the drain is cleaned.

If there’s visible dirt or debris, use an old toothbrush to scrub it away. Cleaning this compartment once a month can improve washing efficiency and prolong the life of your machine.

Other Key Parts to Clean

Rubber Door Seal

The rubber seal around the washing machine door is another area often ignored. Pull back the seal and you may see a layer of sticky grime and residue. This area stays damp, providing an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, which can contaminate clothes and even pose health risks.

To clean:

  • Mix laundry detergent with warm water (1:1 ratio) or white vinegar with baking soda.

  • Apply the solution to the rubber seal and let it sit 15–20 minutes.

  • Wipe thoroughly with a clean cloth to remove dirt, mold, or mildew.

Lint Filter

The lint filter prevents lint, fibers, and dirt from entering the drain and causing blockages. If neglected, it can leave clothes smelling unpleasant and even cause tiny fibers to stick to fabrics, which may irritate sensitive skin.

To clean the lint filter:

  • Remove the filter and scrub it with an old toothbrush.

  • Rinse thoroughly and reassemble.

Detergent Drawer

Detergent drawers also collect residues and bacteria, so they need regular cleaning.

  • Remove the drawer and scrub it as usual.

  • For stubborn residue, soak the drawer overnight in diluted bleach or warm soapy water, then rinse well before returning it to the machine.

Why Regular Cleaning Matters

Neglecting these hidden components can lead to:

  • Clothes that don’t smell fresh after washing

  • Increased buildup of bacteria and mold

  • Possible skin irritation or allergic reactions

  • Reduced washing efficiency and shortened appliance lifespan

By taking a few extra minutes each month to clean these hidden areas, you can ensure that your clothes are truly clean, fresh, and safe, while also keeping your washing machine in top condition.
