Inside I’m A Celebrity star Angry Ginge’s relationship with dad he claims is a ‘massive racist’

I’m A Celebrity contestant Angry Ginge has previously spoken candidly about his deeply strained relationship with his father, whom he has described as “racist” and “not a good man.” The 23-year-old YouTube star, whose real name is Morgan Burtwistle, is currently taking on the challenges of the Australian jungle, but his difficult family history has resurfaced as fans revisit past episodes of his podcast.
During an episode of Off Stream, the podcast he co-hosts with fellow creator Tays, Ginge opened up about growing up in what he described as a hostile environment shaped by his father’s harmful attitudes. He claimed that his father openly used racist language and even chose offensive slurs as usernames in online games. “Growing up, my dad was a massive racist,” he told Tays, adding that it was only with age that he fully understood the severity of what he had witnessed. He said that as a child, he unintentionally absorbed much of his father’s behaviour without understanding its implications.
A Childhood Marked by Conflict and Instability
In another podcast appearance, Ginge revealed that his father once took his mother to court to change his legal name. His birth name — Morgan Sam Lee Burtwistle — was altered to Morgan Sam Lee Burtwistle-Smith after his mother lost the case. Ginge later removed “Smith” from his surname as an adult, putting distance between himself and his father. Reports in The Mirror and Daily Mail have previously covered this strained relationship, noting that Ginge has made several attempts to detach himself from that chapter of his life (Mirror), (Daily Mail).
He also alleged that his father repeatedly refused to pay child maintenance. According to Ginge, his father deliberately switched jobs frequently so authorities would struggle to trace him. “This is why I repeatedly say he’s not a good man. And this is the tip of the iceberg,” he insisted during the discussion.
Disturbing Incidents From His Youth
Ginge went on to share further troubling accounts from his early years, pointing to repeated outbursts that left both emotional and physical damage. He described multiple occasions when the back fence of their home was smashed in, leaving behind broken wood, empty beer cans and shattered glass. “I cannot even count on two hands how many times the fences were kicked in,” he said, alleging that his father was responsible, either acting alone or with the help of others.
He also recounted a frightening memory from his childhood: “In the middle of the night, he just came to the house… picked up a brick and threw it through the window. Then the next day, he actually had the balls to come and try to see me.” Similar claims about volatile behaviour have been noted in earlier interviews and summaries from outlets such as Metro, which previously reported that the streamer had no interest in maintaining contact with his father as an adult (Metro).
Attempts at Control and Contact
According to Ginge, when his mother began seeing a new partner and the family moved, his father involved the courts again because he wanted access to his son — despite his mother’s objections. He suggested that this legal pressure became a recurring theme throughout his childhood.
Years later, after Ginge gained popularity online, he claimed his father tried to reach out to his mother in an attempt to reconnect. However, Ginge said he had no desire to rebuild any form of relationship following years of trauma and instability.
A Family Fragmented
Toward the end of one podcast episode, Ginge also revealed a rarely mentioned detail: he has a half-sister he does not really know. He said the only thing they share is “a [bleep] for a dad,” indicating that his father’s behaviour impacted more than one household.
Coverage from The Sun and OK! Magazine (Sun), (OK Magazine) has noted that Ginge’s openness about his upbringing has resonated with many of his followers, who praise him for breaking the cycle of behaviour he grew up around. As Ginge continues his journey on I’m A Celebrity, his past — marked by resilience and a determination to distance himself from negativity — offers viewers a deeper understanding of the person behind the online persona.
