Mara Brock-Akil Set to Reimagine Judy Blume Classic for Netflix
She’s bringing a well-loved story to a new generation!
Few stories capture the tenderness, thrill, and heartbreak of young love quite like Judy Blume’s Forever. Nearly five decades after the book’s release, the story is being reimagined for a new generation. Netflix has officially announced that Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. will lead Forever, a contemporary adaptation from celebrated writer and producer Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, Being Mary Jane) (source: Netflix via Variety).

The new series transforms Blume’s 1975 coming-of-age novel into an epic modern love story centered on two Black teens discovering the beauty and complexity of first love in today’s world. Their relationship, filled with curiosity, vulnerability, and the growing pains of self-discovery, explores what it truly means to be each other’s “firsts” — emotionally, romantically, and spiritually.
“The idea that your first love never really leaves you is timeless,” Akil said in a statement. “We want to explore that feeling from a place that today’s audiences — especially Black youth — can see themselves in.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
In this adaptation, Lovie Simone — known for her dynamic performances in Greenleaf, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Social Distance — portrays Keisha Clark, a smart, outspoken, and determined high school track star with big dreams beyond the classroom. Opposite her, Michael Cooper Jr., whose breakout role in On the Come Up earned him industry attention, plays Justin Edwards, a kind-hearted scholar-athlete with D1 basketball ambitions and a quiet determination to forge his own path apart from his accomplished parents (source: Deadline).
Adding further prestige to the project, Oscar-winning actress and director Regina King has joined as an executive producer and will direct the series’ pilot episode. King’s creative vision, proven through acclaimed works like One Night in Miami and If Beale Street Could Talk, is expected to bring emotional depth and cinematic flair to the adaptation (source: Variety).
Mara Brock Akil’s partnership with Netflix, announced in 2020, was one of the streamer’s most anticipated creative deals, marking a new chapter for authentic Black storytelling in mainstream media (The Hollywood Reporter). Forever represents the first fruit of that deal — a deeply emotional, character-driven series that revisits universal themes of love, loss, and identity through a culturally resonant lens.
While Netflix has yet to confirm an official release date, production is reportedly underway, and early buzz suggests the show could become one of the platform’s standout romantic dramas. Fans of Blume’s original work and Akil’s storytelling are eager to see how this generation-defining adaptation will capture the magic — and the heartbreak — of falling in love for the very first time.
“Blume’s Forever was groundbreaking when it first came out,” wrote The New York Times in a 1975 review. “It treated teenage intimacy with honesty and compassion.” Nearly fifty years later, that same spirit is set to shine again — this time through a lens that celebrates Black love, representation, and emotional truth.
As we await Forever’s debut, one thing is clear: some stories never fade — they simply evolve, reminding us that first love, in all its joy and complexity, truly lasts forever.
