Most do this wrong: 10 bathroom habits you’re doing incorrectly

The bathroom might feel like a place where habits are second nature, but many common routines can actually harm your health, damage your home, or negatively impact the environment. From where you store your toothbrush to what you flush, small mistakes can lead to big problems.

Below are ten everyday bathroom habits people often get wrong — and how to fix them for a cleaner, safer, and more eco-friendly home.

1. Flushing “flushable” wipes

Even when labeled as flushable, most wipes don't break down like toilet paper. They can clog pipes, contribute to sewer blockages (known as fatbergs), and cost cities millions in repairs. Always throw wipes in the trash.

2. Storing your toothbrush on the counter

Leaving your toothbrush exposed—especially near the toilet—allows bacteria from toilet plume (tiny droplets released during flushing) to land on the bristles. Store your toothbrush inside a cabinet or use a ventilated cover, and keep it at least 6 feet from the toilet.

3. Pouring bleach into a septic system

Bleach kills the beneficial bacteria needed for a septic tank to function properly. This can lead to buildup, clogs, and expensive repairs. Use septic-safe cleaners instead.

4. Leaving the shower curtain open

An open shower curtain folds over itself, trapping moisture and encouraging mold growth. Spread the curtain out fully to let it dry evenly and prevent mildew.

5. Using too much toilet paper

Excess toilet paper is a top cause of toilet clogs. Try sticking to 4–5 sheets per wipe and flush more often if needed.

6. Ignoring mold and mildew

Mold thrives in damp bathrooms and can trigger allergies and breathing issues. Clean regularly with vinegar or baking soda, fix leaks quickly, and keep the area dry.

7. Poor bathroom ventilation

Moisture builds up fast, leading to peeling paint, mold, and unpleasant smells. Run your bathroom fan for at least 20 minutes after bathing, or open a window if you don’t have a fan.

8. Using harsh chemical cleaners

Strong chemicals can damage surfaces and release harmful VOCs into the air. Choose gentler, natural cleaners that are safer for your health and the environment.

9. Skipping deep cleaning

A quick wipe isn’t enough. Deep clean your bathroom at least once a month—especially grout, corners, behind the toilet, and under the sink—to prevent buildup and bacteria growth.

10. Not replacing your toothbrush regularly

Replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months, or sooner if the bristles fray. An old toothbrush becomes less effective and can harbor bacteria.

Bonus: Using the wrong towel for your face

Using your body towel on your face can transfer oil and bacteria, leading to breakouts. Always use a separate, clean, soft towel just for your face.
