18-Year-Old Brandon Moss Makes History as Youngest Mayoral Candidate in Fairfield, Alabama
Just two weeks after donning his cap and gown, 18-year-old Brandon Moss returned to the spotlight — this time not as a graduate, but as a candidate for mayor.

On June 7th, the Fairfield, Alabama native officially announced his historic campaign, becoming the youngest person ever to run for mayor in the city’s history, ABC News reports. With a population just under 10,000, Fairfield sits southwest of Birmingham, and Moss hopes to bring a bold, fresh vision to its leadership.
“I am ready to take on this challenge. Age doesn’t guarantee wisdom or innovation,” Moss told reporters. “I’m not going to say I’m perfect or I know it all; it will take a team of good people to accomplish good things.”
A Young Leader With Experience
Though his age makes headlines, Moss’s background shows the drive of someone seasoned in civic engagement. A graduate of the Birmingham Academy of Civic Engagement, he has served as a youth senator and as a member of the Alabama Youth and Government program, even holding a position in the governor’s cabinet. Moss has also been on the Student Advisory Board for the Birmingham City Schools superintendent and completed an executive internship in the superintendent’s office, gaining firsthand experience in local government (CBS News).
Inspired by leaders such as Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and former President Barack Obama, Moss emphasized his desire to bring a “new vision and fresh perspective” to Fairfield. “The past administrations and the people running have done a great job, but I think it’s time to look for something new,” he said. “I love this city, and I believe in its future.”
Plans for Change
Moss has already outlined specific initiatives for the city. If elected, he intends to:
-
Address city finances by hiring a forensic auditor.
-
Boost small business development by introducing pop-up stores in local shopping centers.
-
Combat blight by applying for federal grants to remove dilapidated properties.
His campaign manager, Marilyn Yelder, highlighted that Moss is not tackling this challenge alone. “He has a team of mentors for every aspect, from public speaking to mental health guidance,” she said. “Even at 18, he will be more than prepared to serve as mayor of Fairfield.”
Balancing Education and Leadership
This fall, Moss will begin classes at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, potentially juggling college coursework with mayoral responsibilities — a testament to his determination and drive. According to AL.com, his candidacy has already sparked conversations statewide about youth involvement in local politics, showing that leadership and vision are not bound by age (AL.com).
“I’m running for mayor because I love this city, and I believe in its future,” Moss said.
Whether voters choose him on August 26th or not, Brandon Moss has already redefined what it means to lead at a young age, proving that courage, vision, and purpose can manifest long before a lifetime in politics.
