Popular shampoo recalled over deadly bacteria risk

German company Henkel has issued a recall for over 1,000 bottles of their Tec Italy Totale Shampoo due to concerns about potential contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca, a dangerous bacteria that could cause infections in the eyes, skin, and nose.

Henkel notified the public that the affected shampoo was distributed in New York and California, but it may have reached other states as well. Tec Italy products are also available for online purchase across Europe. According to a statement from the manufacturer, the recalled shampoo is sold in a 33.81 fluid ounce (1 liter) green plastic bottle, with the lot number 1G27542266 on the side and the UPC code 7501438375850.

The company further clarified that exposure to Klebsiella oxytoca could lead to health issues, such as infections of the eyes, nose, and skin, with heightened risks for those with weakened immune systems, as reported by Fox News.

Henkel emphasized that there have been no reported injuries or health issues linked to the contaminated products so far.

Consumers who notice any symptoms or have medical concerns related to the recall are urged to seek advice from a healthcare professional immediately.

Klebsiella oxytoca is generally harmless in the intestines. However, if it spreads to other parts of the body, such as the bloodstream, it can be fatal, with a mortality rate of 10–20% among affected individuals.

If the bacteria enters the body through other routes, such as the bloodstream, it can cause pneumonia-like symptoms including fever, chills, shortness of breath, and coughing. The recall has been classified as Class II, meaning the risk of serious health consequences is minimal, or the product could lead to temporary or medically reversible health issues.

Henkel advises customers who have purchased the shampoo to discontinue use immediately and return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
