Actor-star Zachary Levi, best-known for his role in Shazam!, recently opened up about the professional consequences of his outspoken political views — and the new film he’s starring in, Sarah’s Oil.

Levi told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that although he hasn’t been completely shut out of Hollywood, he believes he has been “gray-listed.” He said:

“I might go so far as to say I was gray-listed, I guess. I’m still getting jobs, and I’m still grateful — very grateful — to be working. And I still have lots of friends in the industry, people who still want to work with me.”

He emphasized his gratitude to colleagues who support him, even if their political views differ:

“I’m very grateful for all of those folks — whether or not we’re even on the same side of the political spectrum — people who know my heart and know that I’m a good man who just wants good in this world. We might disagree on how to get there, but I genuinely want the best for everyone in this world.”

Still, he acknowledged the professional cost of speaking out:

“There’s definitely been a lot of blowback and pushback... There are people in the industry who don’t want to work with me — because I had the audacity to say I didn’t think Kamala Harris was the right choice in our last election and also because I called corporations like Pfizer to account, because I think that we’ve been lied to a lot about everything that’s gone on in the last five, six years.”

Levi described his worldview:

“I am pro-science. I am pro-health. I am pro-human. I’m a libertarian, I’m not even a conservative. I think that all of us ought to have the right to live the life that we choose to live for ourselves, but also recognizing that … our individual liberty ends here. And once it starts affecting somebody else’s individual liberty, well, then we have a problem.”

He added that his aim is not conflict but speaking up when he believes truth is being compromised:

“Speak what you believe to be true and speak it in love.”

The New Film — Sarah’s Oil

Levi’s new project, Sarah’s Oil, produced in partnership with Amazon Studios and Kingdom Story Company, tells the remarkable true-story of Sarah Rector — a young Black girl from early-1900s Oklahoma who became one of America’s first Black female millionaires at just 11 years old.

When Levi read the script, he said it struck him immediately:

“When I read the script, I was blown away… It was an absolutely true story about this young Black girl … who was intelligent and precocious and spirit-filled.”

He recounted the story: Rector believed, prayed over her land, was told by faith it contained oil — and turned out to be right. That discovery changed everything.

Why This Matters & What to Consider

  • Levi’s comments highlight a broader discussion about actors, beliefs and the entertainment industry’s response to outspoken viewpoints. While he says he has not been fully blacklisted, the term “gray-listed” suggests a partial sidelining.

  • The film Sarah’s Oil is interesting not just for Levi’s involvement, but for its subject matter — shedding light on historical narratives often under-told.

  • Levi’s framing of his beliefs as libertarian rather than strictly conservative or liberal suggests he sees his views as about liberty and accountability rather than traditional partisan categories.

In Summary

Zachary Levi is making a public stand. He acknowledges that his political views may have cost him some opportunities in Hollywood, but he says the price is worth it to him. Meanwhile, he is championing a film he believes in and continuing to work.
