10-year-old baseball star dies suddenly after championship game

The tight-knit community of Linglestown, Pennsylvania, is grieving the tragic loss of 10-year-old Bryson Funk, a promising young athlete whose life was cut short just one day after leading his baseball team to a championship win.

On June 11, Bryson stood proudly on the pitcher’s mound for the Linglestown Colts, delivering the final three innings in a tense championship game. With determination and heart, he struck out the final batter—clinching the title for his Dauphin team in a moment that would become both triumphant and tragic.

The very next day, June 12, Bryson collapsed unexpectedly and was rushed to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead.

His family later confirmed that Bryson had been diagnosed with myocarditis, a rare inflammation of the heart, which led to sudden cardiac arrest. According to doctors, his preexisting congenital heart conditions—coarctation of the aorta and a deformed bicuspid aortic valve—were not believed to be connected to his passing.

💔 A Community in Mourning

Bryson’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, teammates, and coaches. His best friend, Elias Vilfort, 9, spoke with CBS 21 through tears, remembering Bryson’s athleticism and joyful spirit:

“He would literally do a backflip to make a play or slide in the muddy dirt, acting like it was nothing. That’s the kind of player he was.
He was very funny. He was always in the game… I’m still shocked that this happened.”

Elias’ mother, Amanda Vilfort, posted a photo of the two boys smiling side by side, writing:

“Elias suddenly lost his best friend yesterday. We are heartbroken and devastated… I pray for comfort for all who are grieving the loss of Bryson. He will be missed beyond belief.”

Bryson’s father, Todd Funk, responded to the post with a deeply emotional message:

“I’ve lost my only son, my throwing buddy. If Elias ever wants to come down, he’s always welcome to throw the baseball around and talk about Bryson.
It would help us all [heal].”

A Talent and a Teammate Remembered

The Linglestown Baseball Association paid tribute to Bryson on Facebook, honoring not only his athletic talent but the spirit and heart he brought to the game:

“Bryson wasn’t just an incredible athlete—he was a teammate, a friend, and a joy to coach. His hustle and his heart will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

💌 Community Support and Fundraiser

In response to the outpouring of grief and love, family friend Nicki Brantner launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Bryson’s family during this unimaginable time. As of June 23, the fundraiser had already raised over $47,500, nearing its $50,000 goal.

“Bryson passed away June 12. Something no one could have ever imagined happening to such a vibrant, active guy,” Brantner wrote. “He had an amazing championship win on June 11—pitching the last three innings and striking out the last batter for the win! Bryson was quite the athlete. His parents are now facing what no parent should ever endure.”

🩺 Understanding Myocarditis

According to the Mayo Clinic, myocarditis is often caused by viral infections but can also be triggered by medications, environmental toxins, or autoimmune conditions. Symptoms can range from mild fatigue and shortness of breath to chest pain and irregular heart rhythms. In some cases, particularly in children, it may present with few or no symptoms—making it extremely difficult to detect before it becomes life-threatening.

While many patients recover with rest and medical care, fulminant myocarditis can worsen rapidly under physical stress—especially in athletes.

🌟 A Life That Touched So Many

Bryson Funk was more than just a talented young pitcher—he was a loyal teammate, a loving son, and a friend who made others laugh and believe in themselves. His final moment on the field was one of pride, courage, and joy—a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

As the Linglestown community continues to mourn, they also honor a young life filled with promise, energy, and love.
