How to grow papaya in pots, the fruit is heavy, big and sweet

You can grow papaya in pots and it will still bear fruit with a rich sweet taste. Let's find out how.

Choose papaya variety

You should choose F1 hybrid papaya. This type of papaya has a dwarf tree and short internodes. The growth ability of this type of papaya is very good, it can withstand many different weather conditions but still produces a lot of fruit and has high quality fruit.

If you buy seeds at the market to germinate yourself, you should choose ripe fruits. Cut off the top and the bottom of the fruit. Separate the seeds and drop them into water. Remove the seeds that float on the surface of the water, only choose the black seeds that sink to the bottom of the water. Wash off the slimy part on the outside of the seeds and prepare to incubate them for germination.

Seed incubation

Soak the seeds in 40 degrees Celsius water for about 5 hours. Spread the soaked seeds on paper or damp cloth and incubate for about 4-5 days for the seeds to germinate. During the incubation process, spray water to keep the seeds moist.

Sow 2-3 seeds in the incubation pot. After 15-20 days, the papaya will sprout. During this process, you must spray enough water for the sprouts to develop.

You can buy seedlings that have been pre-nursed from nurseries. Buying seedlings that are about 15-20 cm tall will have a high survival rate. Choose a plant with a cluster of roots, dark green leaves with 4 grooves that look like 5 pieces, the base is larger than the top, and grows slightly tilted. This is the shape of a fully mature plant that can produce large, sweet fruits.

Land

You can use ready-made soil or mix soil with compost, worm castings, rice husks, etc. to provide nutrients for plants.

The plant pot must have drainage holes to prevent the plant from getting waterlogged.

Transfer the plant to a pot

When the plant has 4-5 pairs of leaves and reaches a height of 10-15 cm, it can be planted in a pot. Or if you buy a seedling, you can plant it in a pot after buying it.

When the plant is about 50-60 cm tall, stop fertilizing or watering so that the leaves do not dry out. Just make sure the soil is moist enough, do not let the soil dry out.

Fertilize with compost and manure once every 7-10 days. You can use bio-fertilizer or organic fertilizer for plants.

Papaya trees love the sun, so they need to be placed in a sunny, airy place, avoiding water stagnation. Avoid placing the papaya pot in a windy place because the branches, leaves and stems of the papaya tree are very weak and easily broken.

After about 5-6 months, the papaya tree can flower. At this stage, adding fertilizer to the tree will help the tree produce more fruit, firm fruit and sweet ripe fruit.

Regarding the season, if the papaya tree is planted around March - April, it can be harvested in the summer; if it is planted around September - October, it can be harvested in July - September of the following year. If well cared for, the papaya tree can produce fruit 3 times a year.
