Dog Bites: Not Only Do They Cause Pain and Ugly Scars, but They Can Also Be Fatal
Dog bites cause pain, leave unsightly wounds, and carry the risk of infection. In severe cases, they can be life-threatening, especially if rabies is transmitted and not treated in time. Even when walking on the street, you might encounter a dog. Sometimes it could be a stray or even a pet dog if you’re not cautious.
Many people get scared when they see a dog and run away, unaware that this is not the best approach. Below, we’ll guide you on how to avoid being bitten by dogs and how to protect yourself if attacked, based on the guidelines of the City of Mesquite, Texas.
1. When You See a Stray Dog on the Street:
If you encounter a dog roaming freely, stop what you're doing and find a safe place to wait until it leaves. Do not approach, pet, feed, or play with stray dogs. It’s best to avoid any stray dog because you don't know how it behaves. Even playing with one could result in scratches and the potential spread of diseases.
2. Stay Calm and Don’t Run Suddenly:
Maintain a safe distance from the dog. Avoid shouting or making eye contact, as dogs are very sensitive. If a dog notices you’re calm, it may lose interest and leave.
3. Avoid Running Away:
Running is a common reaction when people see an aggressive dog, but this instinct can trigger the dog's hunting instincts, making it chase you. If you’re afraid, it’s better to slowly walk backward or sideways, moving away from the dog until you reach a safe area. Do not turn your back on the dog, as it may perceive this as suspicious behavior, similar to that of a thief. If you move with your back turned, the dog may attack.
4. Avoid Areas with Stray Dogs:
If you enjoy jogging or walking, avoid areas where stray dogs are often found.
5. Protect Yourself:
If a dog attacks, use any object you have, like a jacket, purse, stick, or even shoes, to shield yourself, so the dog bites the item instead of you.
6. If You Fall:
If you fall to the ground, curl up into a ball and use your hands to protect your head until the dog leaves.
7. Call for Help:
If you can't escape from the dog or if it attacks you, scream for help.
8. Don’t Play Excessively with Pet Dogs:
Even with household dogs, excessive teasing can make them angry and lead to biting. Children, who may not understand a dog’s mood, are especially vulnerable. Teach your children not to tease dogs excessively.
9. Be Aware of Rabies Risk in Pet Dogs:
Even pet dogs can be infected with the rabies virus. Keep an eye on your pet to ensure it doesn’t come into contact with stray dogs, as the risk of disease transmission is higher.
10. Teach Children Proper Behavior Around Dogs:
Parents should educate their children not to tease, hit, or wrestle with dogs. Never leave small children alone with any dog, even pets, as even small dogs can cause severe injuries.
11. Immediate Medical Attention:
If you are bitten or scratched by a dog, seek medical care immediately for first aid and rabies vaccination.
