Hacker with over 30 years experience shares the scariest things he’s seen on the dark web
For most people, the phrase “dark web” carries an air of mystery, fear, and misunderstanding. To some, it’s an almost mythical part of the internet reserved for shadowy dealings. To others, it’s simply a place that exists beyond the reach of search engines. But according to a hacker with more than three decades of experience navigating its depths, the reality is even more unsettling than most would imagine.
The dark web is essentially an unregulated corner of the internet, one that isn’t accessible through ordinary browsers like Chrome or Safari. Instead, it requires specialized tools and software, such as Tor, to even begin exploring. This additional layer of anonymity is precisely why it has become infamous for illegal marketplaces, criminal activity, and cyber operations that thrive out of sight from the public web.
In a video interview shared by VICE, a hacker who spent years operating in the shadows offered a chilling glimpse into what he has witnessed. Once a so-called “black hat” hacker—someone who exploits systems for personal gain without ethical restraint—he has since transformed his career. Today, he identifies as a “white hat,” a professional who uses his skills to test and strengthen cybersecurity for companies and institutions.
Reflecting on his past, the hacker admitted that he once enjoyed the thrill of disruption, pushing systems to their breaking point just to prove that he could. But his perspective shifted as he saw firsthand the destructive consequences of cyberattacks on real people and organizations. Now, he dedicates his work to prevention rather than chaos.
Among the most disturbing trends he described are ransomware attacks—a form of cyber extortion where hackers lock victims out of their own systems and demand payment in exchange for restoring access. While this might sound like a frustrating inconvenience when applied to an individual’s laptop, the hacker explained that the stakes are often much higher. Hospitals, energy companies, and critical infrastructure are frequent targets, and the consequences of their systems being disabled can be life-threatening.
“Imagine a hospital unable to access patient records or operate essential equipment,” he explained. “At that point, it’s not just about money—it’s about lives.”
What’s even more alarming is how ransom demands have escalated over time. In the early days, cybercriminals might have asked for hundreds or a few thousand dollars. Today, the numbers have skyrocketed into staggering territory. The hacker described one recent campaign where the attackers demanded $70 million for a single key that would decrypt every infected machine. “We’re talking about high-stakes games,” he warned.
This evolution demonstrates that ransomware is no longer the work of isolated criminals. Instead, it has become a massive, coordinated industry with sophisticated operations, financial structures, and even customer support for victims.
Despite the bleak outlook, the hacker emphasized one hopeful trend: more former black hats like himself are turning to legitimate cybersecurity roles, using their insider knowledge to help protect businesses and individuals. The stronger the defense, the less profitable these attacks become for organized crime networks.
Still, his testimony serves as a sobering reminder that the dark web isn’t just a shadowy rumor—it’s a real, thriving underworld where the stakes are measured not just in millions of dollars, but sometimes in human lives.
