Largest Dinosaur Ever Discovered in Argentina: New Titanosaur Fossil Unearthed
New species may be the biggest land animal to have ever walked the Earth
In a monumental paleontological discovery, a local farmer in Argentina has uncovered the fossilized remains of what could be the largest dinosaur—and largest land animal—ever found.
The discovery was made in the deserts of Patagonia, a region already famous for its dinosaur fossils. Based on the enormous size of the femur bones, scientists estimate the dinosaur measured approximately 40 meters (131 feet) in length and stood around 20 meters (65 feet) tall—about the height of a seven-story building.
Heavier Than 14 Elephants: A New Record-Breaker
Weighing an estimated 77 tons, this prehistoric giant is believed to outweigh even the Argentinosaurus, the previous record-holder for the heaviest known dinosaur, by about seven tons. For perspective, that’s the equivalent of 14 fully grown African elephants.
A New Species of Titanosaur
Experts believe the fossil belongs to a previously unknown species of titanosaur, a group of massive, long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs that lived during the late Cretaceous period, around 95 to 100 million years ago.
The fossils were found in rock layers that date back to this era, helping scientists pinpoint when this massive creature likely roamed the ancient forests of Patagonia.
Why This Discovery Matters
This discovery not only reshapes our understanding of the scale and diversity of dinosaur species but also shines new light on the rich prehistoric ecosystems of South America. The ongoing study of the fossil remains will help scientists reconstruct the life, environment, and biology of one of Earth’s most awe-inspiring animals.
Further excavation and research may soon confirm whether this newly discovered titanosaur officially takes the crown as the largest dinosaur to ever walk the planet.
