đŹ PART 2: «The Granddaughter They Sold Away»
The elderly woman stopped crying.
Her eyes searched Claraâs face, confused at first, then suddenly terrified.
âNo,â she whispered. âIt canât be.â
Clara pulled a worn photograph from the pocket of her server apron.
It showed the same baby, wrapped in a pink hospital blanket, with one name written on the back.
Clara.
The old womanâs hands flew to her mouth.
âMy son told me you died,â she cried.
The man in black went pale.
Clara slowly stood, still holding her grandmotherâs hand.
âYou knew about me?â she asked.
The old woman sobbed. âI looked for you for twenty-three years. Your father said your mother ran away and took you. Then he said both of you were gone.â
Clara turned toward the man.
The one who had just called this woman Mother.
Her voice dropped.
âYouâre my father.â
He straightened his suit, trying to recover his arrogance.
âYou donât understand what happened.â
âI understand enough.â
The old woman tightened her grip on Claraâs hand.
âHe stole everything after your grandfather died,â she whispered. âThe hotel, the house, the accounts. Today he was making me sign away the last property in your name.â
Claraâs eyes filled with tears.
âMy name?â
Her grandmother nodded.
âYour grandfather left it to you before they took you from us.â
The man stepped forward. âThis is family business.â
Clara looked around the lobby.
At the guests staring.
At the staff frozen in fear.
At the security cameras above the gold columns.
âNo,â she said. âThis is evidence.â
She lifted her phone and pressed play.
The manâs own voice filled the lobby, recorded moments earlier from Claraâs apron pocket.
Make her sign before the doctor declares her incompetent.
His face collapsed.
The second man backed away.
Clara looked at the hotel manager.
âCall the police.â
Her father grabbed her wrist. âYou ungrateful littleââ
The elderly woman suddenly stood between them.
Her body shook, but her voice was clear.
âDo not touch my granddaughter.â
For the first time, he stepped back.
Clara wrapped one arm around her grandmother as police sirens began to rise outside.
The old woman touched Claraâs cheek with trembling fingers.
âI thought I lost you forever.â
Clara broke then, pressing her forehead to the womanâs shoulder.
âI was serving tea in my own familyâs hotel,â she cried, âand I didnât even know.â
Her grandmother held her tighter.
âYouâre home now.â
And as the men who tried to steal her future were led across the marble floor, Clara stood in the lobby no longer as a server.
She stood as the heir they thought would never come back.
