š¬ PART 2: Ā«The Son She Tried to Kill Before He Was FoundĀ»
Richard could not take his eyes off the necklace.
Twenty-three years earlier, he had given it to a young woman he loved before his family forced him into a marriage arranged around power and money.
He had been told she left the country.
Vanessa had been the one who comforted him.
āWhat was your motherās name?ā Richard asked, his voice barely audible.
The boy swallowed through the pain in his throat.
āMaria Torres.ā
Richardās face went white.
Vanessa shook her head quickly. āRichard, this is insane. Maria disappeared because she wanted nothing to do with you.ā
The boy reached into his torn shirt and pulled out a small plastic bag containing an old photograph and a folded letter.
āShe didnāt disappear,ā he said. āShe spent years hiding me from the woman who threatened to have us killed.ā
Richard took the photograph with shaking hands.
It showed Maria holding a newborn baby.
Around the infantās neck was the same silver pendant.
On the back, she had written:
His name is Gabriel. His father deserves to know him.
Richard looked at the boyās bruised face.
āGabrielā¦ā
The young manās lips trembled at the sound of his name in Richardās voice.
Vanessa backed away. āThis proves nothing.ā
A sudden shout came from the hangar.
One of the mechanics ran toward them, pale and breathless, holding a small device in his gloved hands.
āMr. Hale, step away from the aircraft,ā he said. āThere is an explosive wired beneath the passenger seat.ā
Richardās eyes slowly moved to his wife.
Vanessaās face collapsed.
āYou were going to let me die,ā he said.
Her voice became thin and frantic.
āYou were changing your will. You were looking for Maria again. I knew once you found him, everything would go to your son.ā
Gabriel stared at her in shock.
āYou knew about me all this time?ā
Vanessa looked away.
Richard closed his eyes for one broken second.
Then he turned toward Gabriel.
āWhy is your face bleeding?ā
Gabrielās breathing hitched.
āI came here with my motherās letter this morning,ā he said. āShe had just died. Vanessa saw the necklace and told her men to make sure I never reached you.ā
Richardās expression crumpled.
The son he never knew had arrived grieving, alone, and had still risked his life to save him.
He stepped forward and gently touched Gabrielās battered cheek.
āIām sorry,ā he whispered. āI should have found you.ā
Gabriel tried to stay strong, but his face twisted with years of buried pain.
āShe waited for you until the end.ā
Richard pulled him into his arms.
For a moment, Gabriel stood stiffly, unsure how to be held by a father he had only known from a faded photograph.
Then he broke down against Richardās chest.
Behind them, security officers approached Vanessa as police sirens grew louder beyond the estate gates.
She reached toward Richard.
āPlease. I loved you.ā
He held his son tighter.
āNo,ā he said quietly. āYou loved what my death would leave you.ā
Vanessa was led away beneath the roaring helicopter blades.
Richard looked down at the silver pendant in Gabrielās trembling hand, then pressed it gently against his sonās chest.
āYour mother gave me back my life twice,ā he whispered. āOnce through you, and once through what you did today.ā
Gabriel wiped his tears with a bloody sleeve.
āI donāt need your money.ā
Richard nodded, his eyes filling again.
āI know.ā
He placed one arm around his sonās shoulders and guided him away from the helicopter.
āBut you will never have to face this world without your father again.ā
