However, specialists warn that many users are overlooking crucial safety steps when cleaning their air fryers, potentially creating dangerous situations that could lead to electric shock, appliance damage, or even fire hazards.

Electrical Safety First, a UK-based charity dedicated to preventing electrical accidents, has emphasized that air fryers should never be fully submerged in water and must be allowed to cool for at least 30 minutes before cleaning.

On its official website, the organization clearly states: “Never immerse an air fryer in water, and always wait at least 30 minutes before cleaning it after use.” According to the charity, cleaning the appliance too soon after cooking or placing the entire unit in water can cause electric shock or permanently damage the internal electrical components.

Fortunately, there are safe and effective ways to keep an air fryer clean without putting yourself or your family at risk. Experts strongly recommend unplugging the appliance immediately after use and allowing it to cool down completely before removing any detachable parts.

These removable components, such as the basket and tray, should be washed separately using warm soapy water. A soft sponge or cloth is advised to avoid damaging the non-stick coating, which can wear down quickly if scrubbed with abrasive materials.

For stubborn, baked-on food residue, experts suggest applying a paste made from baking soda and water to the affected area. Let the mixture sit for around 20 minutes before gently rinsing it off. This method helps loosen food debris without the need for harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing.

The main body of the air fryer, which contains electrical parts, should only be wiped clean by hand using a slightly damp cloth. It should never be placed under running water or submerged, as moisture can seep inside and cause serious damage.

Users are also advised never to pour oil directly into the air fryer, to keep the power cord away from heat sources, and to ensure the appliance is unplugged when not in use. These small precautions can significantly reduce the risk of electrical accidents and prolong the lifespan of the device.

In addition, the charity warns against leaving an air fryer operating unattended and recommends filling the basket no more than two-thirds full. Overloading the appliance can restrict airflow, leading to overheating, uneven cooking, and increased fire risk.
