Christian Bale Built $22 Million Foster Care Village in California
Christian Bale Builds Foster Care Village to Keep Siblings Together
Known worldwide for his iconic role as Batman, Christian Bale has spent nearly two decades quietly working on a project he calls one of the most meaningful achievements of his life. The 51-year-old actor joined forces with Dr. Eric Esrailian, a UCLA professor and physician, to co-found the nonprofit Together California, an organization dedicated to building a foster care village where siblings can live together instead of being separated.
A Dream Nearly 20 Years in the Making
The site for the village is located in Palmdale, California, and reflects Bale’s persistence, patience, and personal vision. His inspiration began 17 years ago, when his daughter Emmeline was just three years old. As a new father, Bale wondered what would happen to her if tragedy struck him and his wife. That thought led him to explore the foster care system, where he was shocked to discover that nearly three-quarters of siblings in foster care in the United States are split apart.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith, Bale described this as “a heartbreak within a heartbreak.” Children who lose their parents already suffer unimaginable trauma, and then the system often separates them from their brothers and sisters—the only family they have left. For Bale, this was unacceptable.
Why He Chose to Act
Though he never had direct experience with foster care—having grown up in Wales as the son of a circus performer and an activist—Bale stressed that personal experience should not be a requirement to care. In his words:
“You don’t need to have lived through it to understand. You just need to have a heart.”
To bring his vision to life, Bale partnered with Tim McCormick, who had pioneered sibling-friendly foster housing in Chicago. Together, they turned their attention to Los Angeles County, home to the largest foster care population in the U.S.—over 43,000 children.
More Than Housing: A Community of Belonging
Bale emphasizes that the project isn’t just about building houses. It’s about creating a nurturing space where children can grow, thrive, and build lasting connections. The village is designed to provide not only shelter but also stability, love, and a sense of belonging.
The plans include:
-
12 three-bedroom townhouses, each accommodating six children and professional foster parents.
-
A 7,000-square-foot community center offering education programs, creative workshops, and mentorship opportunities.
-
Studio apartments to provide temporary housing for birth parents working toward reunification and transitional housing for teens aging out of the system.
Bale, who has always been fascinated by architecture and design, described the building process as deeply fulfilling. He said he has enjoyed watching “a place of goodness take shape from the ground up.”
Support and Funding
Funding for the village has come from both public and private sources. In 2022, the city of Palmdale and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors contributed $1.7 million toward purchasing nearly five acres of land. The Austrian-American Council West donated $6 million, and well-known supporters such as Leonardo DiCaprio added their backing.
The construction, led by AC Martin Architects, began in February 2024. CEO Tom Hsieh noted that while his company has designed major high-rise projects, this one carried far greater meaning. “This isn’t just about buildings,” he explained. “It’s about giving back to children who deserve a fair chance at life.”
A Long Road, but Worth the Wait
Progress has been steady but slow. What was once an empty lot near McAdam Park has now transformed into a busy construction zone, with the first walls rising by August 2025. Together California regularly shares updates on social media, calling the site “a place of hope and connection.”
Bale admitted the journey took far longer than expected. At the beginning, he imagined it would be simple: buy land, build houses, and let siblings live together. He even laughed at his own early vision of children singing like the Von Trapp family in The Sound of Music. In reality, the project demanded nearly 20 years of patience, perseverance, and navigating bureaucracy.
Yet for Bale, the long wait was worth every step.
Legacy Beyond the Screen
Bale has starred in blockbuster films and won an Academy Award, but he insists this project will stand among the greatest achievements of his life. “When the time comes to look back at what I’ve done, I want this to be part of the legacy I leave,” he said.
For him, the foster care village is more than charity—it’s a statement about what society should value: keeping families together, nurturing children, and building a future grounded in compassion.
👉 Christian Bale may always be remembered as Batman, but through Together California, he is quietly working on something even more heroic—ensuring that foster children grow up with the love, stability, and togetherness they deserve.
