
It’s Time to Protect Your Stomach: Remove These 5 Popular Vietnamese Breakfast Foods from Your Morning Menu

Although familiar and tasty, many common breakfast choices are far from stomach-friendly. Consuming them regularly—especially on an empty stomach—can damage the gastric lining and, over time, increase the risk of serious diseases, including stomach cancer.
Breakfast is the first meal of the day, when the stomach is empty and most vulnerable. What you eat at this time plays a decisive role in long-term digestive health. Conditions such as gastritis, stomach ulcers, and even stomach cancer may develop from consistently poor breakfast choices.
Stomach cancer is among the most common and deadly cancers worldwide. According to GLOBOCAN 2022, there were more than 1.12 million new cases and approximately 768,000 deaths globally each year. In Vietnam, stomach cancer remains one of the top four most common cancers. To avoid making your stomach “suffer,” it is strongly advised to remove the following five familiar foods from your breakfast routine—even if you love them.
1. Leftover Food Stored Overnight in the Refrigerator

In many Vietnamese households, saving leftovers is common. However, foods containing vegetables, meat, or rice can form nitrites during storage. These nitrites may react with amines in food to produce nitrosamines—compounds classified as strong carcinogens by the World Health Organization.
When consumed on an empty stomach, the body absorbs these harmful substances more readily. Nitrosamines can damage the gastric lining, disrupt cellular DNA, and significantly increase the long-term risk of stomach cancer. Leftover foods also raise the risk of acute food poisoning and gut microbiome imbalance.
2. White Bread and Sugary Pastries
White bread and sweet pastries are convenient and popular breakfast options, but they are high in refined carbohydrates and sugar. These foods stimulate rapid and excessive gastric acid secretion, leading to bloating, acid reflux, and irritation of the stomach lining.
Because they lack dietary fiber, they provide little protection for the stomach. Chronic acid overproduction creates a persistent inflammatory environment, which is a key risk factor for cellular transformation and cancer development. In addition, these foods cause blood sugar spikes followed by quick hunger, making them a poor choice for breakfast.
3. Salty and Pickled Foods

4. Black Coffee or Strong Coffee on an Empty Stomach
Many people drink black or strong coffee as a substitute for breakfast due to busy schedules or for weight control. This is a harmful habit.
Coffee strongly stimulates gastric acid secretion. Without food to buffer it, excess acid corrodes the stomach lining, causing burning sensations, pain, and increasing the risk of gastritis and ulcers. Coffee also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, making acid reflux more likely and raising the long-term risk of esophageal cancer.
5. Extremely Hot or Spicy Foods
Hot noodle soups, porridge, instant noodles, and spicy condiments like chili or satay are common breakfast choices. However, consuming food at temperatures above 65°C can cause repeated thermal injury to the esophagus and stomach lining, leading to chronic inflammation.
When heat is combined with spiciness, the damage becomes more severe. Capsaicin in chili strongly irritates the empty stomach, eroding the mucosa and creating deep ulcers. This environment allows Helicobacter pylori to thrive and accelerates the progression toward stomach cancer. Let food cool slightly and avoid spicy flavors in the morning.
