Colon Cancer “Fears” This One Drink: Widely Available in Vietnam — Just One Glass a Day Brings Surprising Benefits
A new study conducted by Oxford University in collaboration with Cancer Research UK has revealed that a common everyday beverage may significantly reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.
According to Express UK, colon cancer is one of the most common cancers today and is rising sharply among younger adults. Risk factors include smoking, sedentary lifestyles, excessive alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets. Experts note that adjusting eating habits and adding protective foods can meaningfully lower the risk.
Just One Glass of Milk a Day Makes a Difference
Researchers analyzed genetic data from more than 542,000 women, focusing on minor genetic variations related to milk digestion. Participants also reported their daily milk intake.
The study found that individuals who consumed around 244g of milk per day (equivalent to a 250ml glass) had a 17% lower risk of developing colon cancer. Remarkably, the benefit applied to all types of milk — whole, low-fat, and fat-free alike.
Why Milk Helps Protect Against Colon Cancer
Scientists explained that milk’s protective effect primarily comes from its high calcium content. Calcium binds to bile acids and free fatty acids, forming compounds that prevent damage to the intestinal lining. This reduces the likelihood of abnormal cell mutations that can lead to cancer.
Milk also provides vitamin D, known for its anti-cancer properties and its role in regulating cell growth. Additionally, lactose supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria that produce butyrate — a short-chain fatty acid with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.
Expert Opinion
Professor Justin Stebbing of Anglia Ruskin University emphasized:
“This finding highlights how small dietary changes — such as adding milk to your routine — can meaningfully reduce cancer risk and reinforce the importance of nutrition in overall health.”
Milk is inexpensive, widely available in Vietnamese supermarkets, and easy to incorporate into daily meals, making it a practical preventive choice for most people.
Healthy Habits Still Matter
While milk can be a protective factor, experts still recommend adopting additional healthy habits, such as:
-
Quitting smoking
-
Limiting alcohol consumption
-
Eating more vegetables and whole foods
-
Reducing intake of red and processed meats
-
Maintaining regular physical activity
Together with daily milk consumption, these habits can further lower the risk of colon cancer and support long-term health.
