Teacher arrested after viral 'poop spray' prank costs school $55,000

A teaching assistant has been arrested after a viral ‘poop spray’ prank ended up costing a school a whopping $55,000 in damages.

The man from South Carolina repeatedly used the spray inside the school causing weeks of disruption, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials went on to say that the prank conducted by Alexander Paul Robertson Lewis resulted in students’ medical problems being triggered, including respiratory issues

Lewis was taken into custody last Friday (September 19) and has since been charged with Disturbing Schools and Malicious Injury to Property.

The 32 year old was initially held at Florence County Detention Center but was later released on a $9,000 bond.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the Sheriff’s Office said: “Investigators with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a Florence man alleged to have been responsible for creating a foul odor at a Florence High School. According to investigators, between the dates of August 25 and September 19, 2025, Alexander Paul Robertson Lewis, a teaching assistant to West Florence High School, is alleged to have sprayed an internet acquired spray designed to imitate fecal odor at the school.

“Investigators allege that Lewis used the spray on multiple occasions and over time resulting in a disruption of the school, children requiring medical attention for respiratory issues and requiring the school to incur an expenditure of over $55,000 for inspection and damage to the school air conditioning system. The investigation into this matter is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

“Lewis is being held at the Florence County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.”

This post ended up going viral with it doing the rounds on social media, prompting many people to respond to the post with their own reactions.

One user wrote: “I hope some of yall take note of how dramatic a kid can be when they want to go home. They got medical attention for fart spray.”

Another said: “So y’all found the gas leak?”

A third person commented: “If he would’ve done it once then it would’ve been just a harmless prank, but dude using an entire can of fart spray in a week is too much.”

And a fourth added: “Last week, when we kept getting emails, I wondered if it was a kid with stink bombs. It's crazy to think it was a grown adult using fart spray.”

The investigation continues with authorities not yet ruling out the possibility of additional charges.
