What Causes Those Strange Ripples In Your Jeans After Washing?
You expect your favourite jeans to come out clean and fresh when you throw them in the washing machine. However, you discover odd wavy lines or ripples running down the cloth, particularly close to the thighs or seams, when you take them out of the dryer. What took place? Are they destroyed?
Rest assured, this is a common problem. What causes those strange ripples in jeans after washing and how to avoid them are explained here.
1. Fabric Shrinkage and Uneven Drying
Uneven shrinkage is the most common cause of ripples in jeans after washing. Cotton fibres inherently shrink when exposed to heat and moisture, which is why denim is typically constructed from 100% cotton or a cotton blend. The fabric begins to pucker or ripple if certain regions of the jeans shrink more than others, particularly around reinforced areas or strong seams.
When jeans are dried on high heat or washed in hot water, this is more likely to happen. The heat tightens the cotton fibres, resulting in twisted legs or wavy patterns if the fabric does not shrink uniformly.
2. Tension During Manufacturing
The method used to make the denim is another factor contributing to post-wash ripples. Various sections of the jeans are stitched under stress while they are being woven and sewn. The cloth may appear smooth at first if the stress isn’t spread uniformly, but after washing, those spots start to shift and buckle, causing twisting or ripples.
This problem might be more common with jeans that are less expensive or that are constructed with less care. However, if stretch fabric or uneven stitching are used, even pricey jeans may start to ripple.
3. Stretch Denim and Elastane Issues
Many modern jeans include elastane, also referred to as spandex, for comfort and elasticity. Although stretch denim is extremely flexible, it may begin to ripple after multiple washings. Because synthetic fibres may shrink or degrade differently than cotton, the outer layer may distort or pull unevenly.
This is especially noticeable because stretch is an essential component of thin jeans and jeggings. The difference in fibre behaviour becomes more apparent over time after washing and drying.
4. Overloading the Washing Machine
The denim won’t have enough space to move if you put too many things in the washer. Wrinkling and ripple markings may result from twisting, bunching, and unequal stimulation. The shape of the fabric may also be irreversibly altered if the jeans are twisted around other items of clothing, such as hoodies or towels.
5. Drying Mistakes
If tumble drying is done on high heat, all of the above described issues could get worse. The heat permanently sets any shrinkage or distortion into the fabric. Furthermore, if the jeans are over-dried, the fibres become brittle and are more likely to retain puckers and wrinkles.
Air drying jeans is more friendlier and helps them maintain their original shape, even though it may take longer.
How to Prevent Rippled Jeans
- Wash in cold water to minimize shrinkage.
- Turn jeans inside out before washing to reduce friction.
- Use the gentle cycle and avoid overloading the machine.
- Air dry or tumble dry on low heat, and remove while still slightly damp.
- Lay flat or hang by the waistband to help them dry evenly.
- Iron inside out on low heat if ripples appear, to smooth the fabric.
