This traditional practice has been passed down because of how effective it is in nourishing the hair and keeping it healthy over time.
Benefits of Washing and Conditioning Hair with Rice Water
Rice water is rich in vitamin B, vitamin E, amino acids, essential minerals, and various antioxidants. These nutrients help soften the hair, add shine, and strengthen each strand from within. They also stimulate the growth of new hair, making the hair look fuller and healthier.
One of the most valuable components in rice water is inositol, a natural carbohydrate known for its ability to improve hair elasticity and reduce friction between hair strands. Thanks to this compound, using rice water can significantly reduce tangling and breakage, leaving your hair smoother and easier to manage.
Rice water also helps maintain the natural pH balance of the scalp, preventing the overproduction of oil. Its mild anti-inflammatory properties soothe common scalp problems such as dandruff, irritation, or eczema. How to Use Rice Water for Washing and Conditioning Hair
1. Using regular rice water
When washing rice, keep the second round of water for hair care. First, rinse the rice lightly to remove dust and impurities—avoid scrubbing too vigorously, as this can wash away valuable nutrients. Then wash the rice as usual and collect the cloudy water.
Pour the rice water into a container with a lid and let it sit for several hours until the starch settles at the bottom. Carefully pour out the clear layer on top, keeping only the white sediment. This concentrated starchy layer can be used directly on your scalp and hair. Apply it like a natural cleanser, gently massaging to remove dirt and oil. Finally, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
This method is simple, quick, and suitable for regular use.
2. Using fermented rice water
For enhanced results, you can ferment the rice water before using it. After washing the rice and collecting the water, leave it at room temperature for 12–24 hours to ferment. During this time, beneficial nutrients multiply, increasing the effectiveness of the rice water. However, avoid leaving it for more than 24 hours, as it may spoil and develop an unpleasant odor.
Once fermented, apply the rice water to your scalp and hair, leaving it on for 20–30 minutes. Then rinse well with clean water. Fermented rice water can be stored in the refrigerator and used over several days. It is especially helpful for those with dry, damaged, or weak hair, as it delivers deeper nourishment.
