Iran Claims Drone Attack on US Warships Following Seizure of Iranian Vessel

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated once again as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced a retaliatory drone strike against US naval forces in the Gulf of Oman.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, which has close ties to the IRGC, Iranian forces launched a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting US military vessels. This move is reportedly a direct response to the recent seizure of the Iranian-flagged cargo ship, Touska, by US forces.

Retaliation for the "Touska" Seizure

Iranian media reports indicate that the drone operation was triggered by an incident involving the USS Spruance. On April 19, the US destroyer reportedly used naval gunfire to support a boarding operation by US Marines to intercept and seize the Touska.

"The vessel Touska was intercepted while performing an innocent passage on its route from China to Iran," Tasnim stated. The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command, the supreme headquarters of Iran’s armed forces, condemned the US action as "maritime piracy" and a violation of previous ceasefire agreements.

The Scale of the Attack

While the IRGC has confirmed the launch of the drones, specific details regarding the scale of the attack—including the exact number of UAVs used or the damage inflicted—remain undisclosed. As of now, neither the US military nor official Pentagon spokespeople have released a formal comment on the reported strike.

Regional Impact and the Strait of Hormuz

This latest confrontation occurs amidst a volatile atmosphere in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas supplies. The region has seen increased military activity since late February, following operations launched by the US and Israel.

Key points regarding the current military landscape:

  • Drone Capability: US intelligence estimates suggest that despite recent conflicts, Iran retains approximately 40% of its long-range drone fleet, posing a significant threat to maritime traffic.

  • Missile Readiness: Iran has reportedly restored its missile launcher capacity to about 60% of pre-conflict levels.

  • Maritime Blockade: The US has been intensifying efforts to block vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports after failed negotiations in Pakistan.

A Fragile Ceasefire

The situation is further complicated by the fluctuating status of the Strait of Hormuz. Although Iran briefly announced the reopening of the strait on April 17 to welcome a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, it reinstated the blockade just 24 hours later in response to the US-led port blockade.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei called the US actions "illegal and a form of collective punishment against the Iranian people."

Conclusion The reported drone strike marks a dangerous turn in the ongoing maritime standoff. As both nations bolster their naval presence in the Gulf of Oman, the international community remains on high alert for further escalations that could disrupt global energy markets.
